HUGE Concert in Malton

Malton and Old Malton Cricket Club have organised their first major fundraising event in a bid to replace its pavilion which was ruined by fire.

The club faces raising substantial funds to replace the building on The Gannock, Old Malton Road, after an alleged arson attack last May which destroyed 90 per cent of the pavilion. Two men arrested in connection with the investigation were later released without charge. Used every weekend during the season by players, the pavilion was built by club members about 50 years ago and was regarded with great affection in the town.

Club treasurer Joy Hudson said they had been devastated by the fire. “The pavilion was part of our heritage and built by members of Old Malton Cricket Club in 1955,” she said. “It was used for league matches by our teams who play in the York Vale League and by the Under 9s and Under 11s in the York and District Junior Cricket Association.”

Joy said thanks went to their neighbours, Malton & Norton Rugby Club, who offered the use of two of their changing rooms, enabling the club to fulfil their fixtures for 2013.

“The cricket club plans to build a new pavilion but we will need to apply for grants and will be required to raise a significant contribution ourselves,” she said. “Our first major fundraising event is a concert by Huge, which is very popular band in and around York and is guaranteed to supply a highly entertaining and lively evening for all ages.”

Joy said they had been very encouraged by the support already received from local people.

“We would welcome ideas for fundraising but would like anyone wanting to organise their own activities on our behalf to contact us first so we know what and when anything is happening,” she said.

Tickets for the concert are £20 and are available from House Martins day nursery and Smash clotheswear in Malton or by phoning 01653 628458.
